How Smoking Affects Your Life

Those who do not smoke may think that it is simple and easy to quit smoking but they are wrong. Some of us are not aware that when a person decides to quit the habit, he or she will be met with many mental hindrances like depression, anxiety, stress and other challenges just to totally kick out the habit.

But the hopeful news is that even if kicking out the habit of smoking will have some negative effects on the mental health of the smoker due to nicotine withdrawal, this will be temporary. Generally, these symptoms to quit smoking are short lived, lasting from days to weeks.

After you stop smoking, you should realize that the mental health benefits that you can derive will outweigh the obstacles you met after you decide to quit the habit. Know that to quit smoking would mean giving your body a chance to be in a great physical condition, from a reduced risk of lung cancer and heart disease, to healthier skin, hair, nails and teeth. When you stop smoking for good, not only will you achieve positive physical health but also many effects on your mental health and well being which will be positive.

Between smoking and mental health problems, there are several studies that would conclude of a high correlation of these two factors. According to past studies, over 40% of smokers would tend to have at least one condition of mental health, and those who are affected with this mental illness are more likely to be indulged in the habit. It is not surprising this big number because you know of the nicotine effects on the smoker’s body, and that this drug can act as mood stabilizer on people during their state of anxiety and depression and can lift their mood at least for a short period of time.

However, take note that the positive effects of nicotine on a smoker’s mental health are very temporary, and after some time it will actually increase the anxiety of the person and so if he or she will decide to stop smoking, some nicotine withdrawal symptoms will be felt.

When a smoker experiences the symptoms of nicotine withdrawal, he or she could feel helpless in the process, but no need to worry because nowadays we have several options that can be taken to allow the person’s mental and physical health to adjust without the presence of nicotine in the body. One example of kicking the habit of smoking that has become popular nowadays is vaping. There is a recent study that vapers are at a much lower risk of conditions like heart disease, stroke and cancer, even if there is still nicotine in vaping.
